Situationists International

10 January 2008

I am conducting a typographic experiment / project based upon the Situationists International where by I will be creating a journey based upon my own Rules / Laws which create the journey. I will be using ephemera, markings, rubbings, photography and other mark making techniques to record the journey into a typographic ‘package’. Below: a video about Situationists International.

The project was based upon a “Situation” to understand my concept please research “The Situationists International”.

Here are the results from the experiments:

Nam June Paik

14 December 2007

Nam June Paik (July 20, 1932 - January 29, 2006) was a South Korean-born American artist. He worked with a variety of media and is considered to be the first video artist. More info…

The project was to design a book, based on your chosen artists or artist movement, which measured 26×26cm in size with 26 pages which are in double page spreads.

My chosen artist was Nam June Paik, the sole idea of this book was to make it a homage to the artist. To do this I created a video with 26 individual slides which were then put into a fast rolling sequence on a television screen, I then photographed burst shots of the video while it was running, capturing the transitions and effects you get from shooting raw television pictures. Below are some studio shots of the final book which was put together with a CD in a self made book-like package.

LostTri

13 December 2007

LostTri is a typeface. Designed by me.

Based upon the theme of lost I began to explore what could be associated with this theme, the most influential characteristic was the ‘Bermuda Triangle’ - this is where the basic shape “rules” were developed for the typeface, LostTri. The name is taken from the theme Lost and the word Triangle which implements - ‘Tri’. There was also a small publication made about the typeface.

Below is the typeface as a poster display which was board at University.

Also concluding this post is a few samples of Font and Type design and also a small advertisement on the new ‘Font Book’.

Typographic Map

09 December 2007

The main objective of producing a ‘typographic map’ is to record in photographs, words, descriptive terms and things that are associated with a chosen place. This University brief was taken at a construction site, in Northampton formally known as Timken’s, below is a google aerial view of the chosen place I was to produce my typographic map on. The first stage was to record words and descriptive sentences which are associated with the construction site. Using Letraset, Stencils and freehand drawn type, a series of primitive maps were put together. After this the images were scanned, and digitally perfected. The final print was produced using several layers which were to be screen printed for a final piece, here is the layered pagination and the final outcome.

Primitive designs, and final outcome:

What is Typography?

02 November 2007

Well if you have been reading for the past month and not understood any of my work I have been recently researching Helvetica and Typography as a multimedia and hand made approach. My findings are below, you should enjoy the films I have found.

If you are familiar with Typography and appreciate my work, you would be interested in this article I found on ilovetypography.com - http://ilovetypography.com/2007/10/05/typography-videos/
